M- Mark Dennison
D- Darren
M- We welcome back someone who's been on the show before, with global appeal,
we're still getting emails by the way via koko.com, hi to, or rather bonjorno
to Emma in Italy, and also Heidi in Denmark, em, dunno what hello is, em, bacon.
Anyway, g'day ya flamin' (unintelligible), Darren Hayes
D- I'm good,
that was pretty bad Austrailian, I have to say
M- Chuck
another shrimp on the barbie will ya sport
D- (laughs)
Oh God
M- Come on,
I've been practicing that since the last time we talked, I mean, goodness me
I've been...
D- It was
pretty good, I don't think we say flamin' though
M- Don't
you?
D- I don't
think so
M- Is it
the other f word, ah, we cant do that on a Sunday
D- Yeah,
it's probably the other f word actually (M laughs) How are you?
M- I'm fine
thank you, how's it been going for you cos I know you've been busy out on the
road
D- Yeah,
just sort of been wrapping up the UK tour, which was, em, pretty intense actually.
M- One thing,
and I know we touched on this last time, was the thing about you, that always
kind of em gets em, that I've noticed about you is your huge fan base, there
are these people that follow you, they'll go and see you in Leicester, then
they see you in Sheffield, then they'll travel all the way to Aberdeen and see
you there, you really seem to have got under peoples skin, what do you think
that is that's done that?
D- You know,
I have amazingly loyal fans, theres one girl who's from Mexico and she's actually
coming round the whole world on tour, so they come along and they know that
it's not this choreographed kind of cheesy pop show, even though I'm a pop artist,
you know it's, it's kind of real, so I get lots of poeple that come along for
that experience.
M- I don't
wanna start, you know, having a go at that Mexican girl but that's kind of,
thats almost getting to the point where you think "mmmmm that's getting
a bit freaky, that is" I mean, does she sort of find out hotel room you're
in.
D- No, I
mean, this particular person she's a real sweetheart, she's, you meet her and
you wouldn't even know she's a huge fan because she's very conservative, very
contained just kind of, you know it's the one off experiences that are a little
strange. I ran into some people the other day that were just kind of like, you
know, demanding something, I dunno what they wanted. they were at my hotel and
they were saying "Darren, I've come all the way from London" you know
and I'm standing there saying 'hi' and giving them a hug and taking a picture
and I'm thinking "do you want my spleen, what do you want from me?"'
(M laughs) but em, in general I have to say 99.99% of the time I think my fans
are pretty cool.
M-You know,
if in doubt you know, just reach for that soap they've got in the hotel room,
shower cap will often passify most people, you know, just as long as it's been
touched by Darren Hayes, hey, you know....
D- (in a
funny voice) I found this piece of lint in my belly button and I'd like to give
it to you...
M- (laughs)
What a great idea, can we give that away later on the show, fantastic! Is it
signed (D laughs) we wish you the best of luck for the chart later this.., do
you still get a little bit kinda nervous when it comes to the chart, I know
you've had a great tour, you've had the singles selling phenomenal numbers,
great air play and everything but when it comes to the chart are you still sitting
there at 4 o'clock on a Sunday afternoon thinking 'oooh"..
D- No, you
see, I didn't even know that it was on Sunday at 4 o'clock and thats the truth,
I mean, I, if someone tells me I've got a no.1 single I'd be, you know, excited
but in general em, I kinda look at it at the end of the year, how many records
have, did I sell, you know, how many people came to my show, that kind of thing,
but hey, if I get a high chart result I'll be excited.
M- (laughs)
I was just about to say, if you get to no.1, I'll be round your house, we're
gonna have a party.
D- You know
it's interesting, I think in the UK it's extremely competitive and it's all
about that chart result whereas in Austrailia and places like America, it can
take 6 months for a single to kind of build sales so I'm a little bit naive
about how important the chart is here, but, i'm pleased when I get in the top
10, thats cool..
M- Absolutely,
well, we think it's gonna do it for you this afternoon, we wish you the best
of luck. Darren Hayes.
D Thank you
